Orban is a parallel medium school committed to providing an exceptional education and a high academic standard. We believe the medium of instruction is as important as the content. That is why we have English and Afrikaans home language classes and from Grade R we offer isiZulu as a second additional language for all.
What we offer
Currently, there are two English classes and one Afrikaans class per year group.
We follow a four term enriched curriculum in all fields of knowledge: Language, Life Skills, Social Sciences, Natural Science, Mathematics, Technology, as well as isiZulu, Computers and Physical Training. As part of our curriculum we have a special focus on Music, Art, Drama and Dance.
Our teachers are carefully selected to have the necessary qualifications and experience in their areas of expertise. Classes do not exceed 20 learners – it ensures that our children receive the best possible attention and support throughout their years of pre-primary and primary education.
Orban School incorporates the STEM programme and prepares learners for scientific and computing research, by consolidating basic, fundamental skills in Science, Technology and Mathematics across subject borders. We teach children to work with their hands, to manipulate materials and to grasp all building blocks leading up to a field like Robotics. We look at mechanical systems, electrical systems and the skills in order to build them. A current example is the Grade 7 project where small groups of learners have to design and construct their own marble run on the principles of an electrical circuit.
Music, Art, Drama and Dance form part of our curriculum from Grade R. Each learner – from grade 1 to grade 7 – participates in the National Eisteddfod every year, albeit in a group or individual item. For 9 consecutive years now (from 2010-2018), Orban School receives the Award for Best Overall Performance for an Institution in the Johannesburg Region (the region includes primary and high schools, as well as private institutions from Johannesburg South, Central and East). Our dynamic Arts Department ensures the learners enjoy performing and do so with confidence. Their unflagging energy and enthusiasm result in an annual professional stage production (learnt from script), involving every learner in the primary school. Examples include the South African premiére of Xanadu earlier this year, Peter Pan, Fame Jr, Alice in Wonderland, Mulan and more.
We host an annual Art Exhibition showcasing the best of Orban’s art, including at least one work by every learner, as well as all the artwork that received awards at the Eisteddfod during the year.
